Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park Pardons 110-Year-Old Lobster, Lorenzo
At Peter’s Clam Bar, tradition runs deep—and sometimes, so does compassion.
In a heartwarming ceremony that’s become a beloved local tradition, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin and Nassau County Legislator John Ferretti issued an official pardon to Lorenzo, a 110-year-old, 21-pound lobster who had called Peter’s Clam Bar home for more than a decade.
Rather than ending up on a dinner plate, Lorenzo was granted freedom, escorted in style by a Hempstead Bay Constable boat, complete with flashing lights and sirens, before being released into the peaceful waters of Hempstead Bay. It’s a story that captures the community spirit—and quirky charm—that Peter’s Clam Bar has cultivated for decades.
A Long Island Staple Since 1939
Located in Island Park, Peter’s Clam Bar is more than just a seafood spot—it’s a landmark. Established in 1939, the bar has become a go-to destination for fresh clams, oysters, lobster rolls, and some of the best waterfront dining on Long Island. From its iconic neon sign to its unbeatable atmosphere, Peter’s is where generations of families have come together for sunny afternoons, salty air, and great seafood.
A Lobster with Local Legend Status
Lorenzo isn’t just any lobster—he became part of the Peter’s family. Over the years, customers admired him, took photos, and asked about his age and origin. At roughly 110 years old, Lorenzo had already lived through two world wars, the moon landing, and the rise of social media. His ceremonial send-off was a celebration of longevity, local pride, and our shared appreciation for the ocean’s wonders.
Now swimming free in his natural habitat, Lorenzo the lobster lives on as a local legend—a symbol of the spirit and stories that make Peter’s Clam Bar so much more than just a place to eat.
Come visit Peter’s Clam Bar this season for delicious seafood, family-friendly vibes, and a true taste of Long Island history.
